Source Language Effect on Translating Korean Honorifics

This paper investigates honorific phenomena on two variants of Korean translation corpus, based on translations from Japanese and English. One surprising result is how different the corpora were, even after normalizing orthographic differences. Translations are dependent not just meaning, but also on the structure of the source text.

Evanescent Fields Inside a Cut-off Waveguide as Near Fields

Usually, electromagnetic evanescent waves are some kinds of near fields. However, it looks as if the evanescent waves inside a cut-off waveguide had nothing to do with any near field. In this paper, we will show that the evanescent waves inside a cut-off waveguide can also be regarded as the near fields of an aerial array.

The Spatial Variation of Membrane Potential Near a Small Source of Current in a Spherical Cell

A theoretical analysis is presented of the change in membrane potential produced by current supplied by a microelectrode inserted just under the membrane of a spherical cell. The results of the analysis are presented in tabular and graphic form for three wave forms of current: steady, step function, and sinusoidal. As expected from physical reasoning, we find that the membrane potential is nonu...

A Second Bright Source Detected Near SN1987A

Speckle interferometry observations, made just 30 and 38 days after the explosion of supernova SN1987A (SN) (which was first seen on February 23, 1987), showed evidence for a bright source, separated from the SN by only 60 mas. Reprocessing of that data using new image reconstruction algorithms has resulted in much cleaner images which not only clearly show the bright spot reported in 1987, but...
